New Membership Eligibility Revised!

Posted On Friday, December 2, 2016

November 2016—The entire International Executive Board (IEB) realized that the time had come to make some changes in Alpha Delta Kappa and this was one of them.  We recognize that there are those retired educators who are still interested in education, who are still in contact with working educators and who want more than a social club.  Those women can bring a lot to Alpha Delta Kappa and we can offer many opportunities to them.

Our mission remains the same, Alpha Delta Kappa builds educational excellence, altruism and world understanding through fellowship.  Alpha Delta Kappa remains an organization for women educators, now some new members will be in the classroom and some will have retired.  Our membership still needs to grow and we need to initiate both active educators and retired educators who are still interested in and connected to education.

1) This change is effective January 1, 2017.
2) The Membership Application (H-103) is being revised and simplified.  Look for the R-17 at the top of application page.  (the “R” refers to revised and number is year)
3) Allowing Fidelis Chapters to initiate retired members must be voted on at the International Convention by delegates as it requires a Bylaws change.

From the Constitution, Article III-Membership Eligibility.  (Section 3 is the new addition.)

          (3)  Shall, in a country other than the U.S., have met the requirements for teacher certification, administrative certifications, or certification in a specialized field of education in the country in which she was employed.

Section 3.  To be eligible for membership in Alpha Delta Kappa, a woman who is retired must meet the following requirements:

       (2)  Shall, in the U.S., have met the requirements for teacher certification, administrative certification, or certification in a specialized field of education in the state in which she was employed:
          (3)  Shall, in a country other than the U.S., have met the requirements for teacher certification, administrative certifications, or certification in a specialized field of education in the country in which she was employed.

         c.  Continues to demonstrate a genuine interest and active involvement in the current educational process.

Section 4.  To be eligible for membership in a new chapter, a woman must be approved by a screening committee of Alpha Delta Kappa members.

International Website Help

Posted On Saturday, November 12, 2016
Updating your own contact information: Once you are logged in, go to "My Profile" to update your contact information, username/password, etc. Members can update their name, address, phone number, email address, engaged/employed status and DOB by clicking on the pencil icon at the top right corner of the area they want to update. The editable areas will turn white and be sure to save your changes. This update will be reflected instantly at Headquarters so there is no need to complete the H-119 form.

Password protection:
The only password protected areas of the website are the directory, marketplace, “My Profile” and a few misc. areas but, otherwise, everything else is public. Hopefully this will make it easier for members to access items quickly without having to sign in.

Username and Password:
By now, all members of AΔK should have received a new username and password via email for the new International AΔK website.  If you need assistance with obtaining your username/password please contact Headquarters.

Documents and Forms - How to download and submit:
Documents and forms can either be downloaded and typed into so they can be emailed to Headquarters or it can be printed to complete and submit however chosen (USPS, fax, email, etc.). Unfortunately, we are not able to offer online forms at this time but we are working to find a viable solution.

You do not need to create a google account in order to download the document. Click on the link to a form and it directs you to google docs because that's where they are stored.

It will look like the below example:

At the top of the page in the middle of the screen, click on the download button (arrow with the line under it). Then you’ll need to follow your browser's instructions on how to access the downloaded document to open and/or save it.

If overlapping occurs you must download the document first (in order to turn formatting on) and then print it out.

Directory:
Once logged in you can go to the directory and click on “My Chapter Roster” to see your own chapter’s roster. Also, the less information entered to locate a particular member or chapter the better the results will be. For instance, if you’re searching for Ruth Ann Griggs simply enter “griggs” into the last name field and press enter. Then click the link on Ruth Ann's name from the results that populate below on the page and her contact info will pop up in a new window.

Contact Headquarters:
Please feel free to contact Headquarters for any questions, concerns or assistance! That's what we're here for, our members!!

Disaster Relief

Posted On Friday, September 30, 2016
Recently we have been experiencing more and more natural disasters across this country. Many of them are endangering our sisters and the communities where they live. There have been floods in Louisiana and North Carolina recently as well as in Maryland and West Virginia this summer plus the fires in California. I checked with sisters in Alabama and Mississippi as well since they were in the line of all the rains and at this time I have no report of any problems from these two states. The storms (heavy rains) were moving Northeast and I have no report from this area at the time of this note.

I have been in touch with sisters in these areas and can report to you that we do have sisters in Louisiana who have lost their homes or have severe water damage. The fires in CA are very close to the same area where schools were destroyed last year. Our Alpha Delta Kappa sisters are affected by these disasters. Let us keep them in our thoughts and prayers at this time as they assess their damage and work to move forward.

Keeping up with the weather and disasters of this magnitude is difficult at times.  Please keep in touch and let us know if you have something to be shared or reported regarding our Alpha Delta Kappa family.

There are many states and agencies who are moving to get supplies and assistance to those in need at this time according to news reports that I’ve seen.
What can we do?  The Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation has a line item in its budget for disaster relief. Donations can be sent to HQ written to the Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation and you can indicate on the subject/memo line “disaster relief” or more specifically to a S/P/N (ex:  Louisiana flooding).  Online donations may also be made through the website. When it is specific to a S/P/N, those monies will be sent to the S/P/N treasurer and that S/P/N Disaster Relief Committee will decide how to distribute the funds to assist our members affected.  A donation with only “disaster relief” will go into the fund and be distributed as needed depending on the number of inquiries. Your donation is tax deductible and you will receive a donation statement for tax purposes in February.

Let us pull together and embrace our sisters with support, love and care who are in need at this time.

With love in sisterhood,
Ruth Ann and Barbara
2015-17 Alpha Delta Kappa President & International Ex. Board Chairman

A note about membership badges lost in natural disasters:  If chapters have extra badges in their badge banks, please send them to International Headquarters (1615 W 92nd St, Kansas City, MO 64114) with a personal note to a sister who may have lost hers in a disaster, and we will see that they are appropriately distributed. Thank you so much! Executive Director Laura C. Bourgeois
