~Project B.O.O.K.S. (Books On the Move) Dedication
There were 22 Alpha Delta Kappa sisters from all over the country who came together August 6-10 for this experience. The size of the reservation is about the size of the state of Connecticut. The bookmobile and the only library are in Eagle Butte, which is near the center of the reservation.
The bookmobile has a wheelchair lift and an awning on one side that rolls out and wooden shelves and desks inside. The sisters in attendance shelved books getting it ready for the dedication. There were actually two dedications on two different days. The first was in LaPlant, South Dakota at a school called Tiospayi Topa where about 50 people attended. Our sisters prepared a lunch of sandwiches, fruit and pretzels in the school cafeteria. After lunch book bags and bookmarks were distributed.
The second dedication was at the Takini School near Cherry Creek where the superintendent spoke of plans for improving the school. The bookmobile will give the people access to books, computers and the internet expanding their knowledge.
The sisters attended a ceremony and ate dinner at the home of the great-great granddaughter of Sitting Bull. They also visited a ranch where there were wild horses. While learning about life on the reservation, our sisters realized the impact we have provided in the lives of the Lakota/ Sioux on the Cheyenne River Reservation.
Over $80,000 was donated by our sisters for this project!
