Excellence in Education
Northwest Region Excellence in Education Recipient: Lesa Meath, Alaska Gamma
Lesa works in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. She is a First Grade teacher in the morning and then is an RTI (Response to Intervention/Instruction) tutor for Math and Literacy in the afternoon. Additionally, she is a coach and support for the other tutors. Lesa serves as a liaison between the staff and the tutors and serves on the administrative team to provide data and reports.
She has made significant contributions at the local, state and national level and is a National Board Certified teacher. Lesa is a resource for teachers throughout her state. She plans and coordinates the State Literacy Conferences. The turnover rate for teachers in Alaska is a grave concern. Providing teachers with quality professional development and support is crucial to student achievement.
Lesa has strong communication and leadership skills. She honors individuals and respectfully shares her insights. She has had experience as a mentor with the Statewide Alaska Mentorship Project. Lesa invests her time and energy with new teachers. She introduces others to professional resources and groups. Lesa is eager to learn and continues to seek out opportunities to further her education. Instead of keeping her experiences and knowledge to herself, she is very eager to share with others. She has an enduring desire to teach all whom she encounters with joy and efficacy.
Her effect on others is profound. In one of her nomination letters it says,” Little did I know that Lesa’s intelligence, energy, passion for excellence, determination to create better lives for others and genuine empathy for children and families would be a guiding light in my professional life.”
From Lesa’s statement:
As a beginning teacher I was blessed with informal mentors who shared ideas, materials, led me to resources and organizations and took an interest in my growth. Among these influential teachers were Alpha Delta Kappa sisters. They instilled in me what it means to set lofty standards and be an inspiring leader.
